Choosing Between Certified and Non-Certified Diamonds

Diamond Certification GIA | Diamond Grading | Shimansky

Diamonds are pricey and getting an engagement ring for a partner requires preparation. Part of the preparations is to know what it means when a diamond is GIA certified and having knowledge on choosing between certified and non-certified diamonds. You will be spending a large amount of money, so it will only be wise to know the value of the diamonds you are buying. Getting familiar with how to determine the authenticity of a diamond as a buyer is one key factor that you are indeed sincere in buying the best diamond for your partner.

Who Certifies the Diamonds?

Gemological Institute of America  (GIA) are   organizations who are authorized to certify diamonds. They are widely recognized by their “4cs” in grading diamonds. Another institution who also certified diamonds is American Gemological Society (AGS). These are just two among the several institutions who certify diamonds.

Benefits of Shopping for Certified Diamonds

You Can Verify Features of the Diamond

Diamonds have four features that buyers should check: its clarity, color, cut and carats. By having a certificate, you will be able to verify the details of each feature. You are then 100%  of the authenticity for the diamond you are going to buy. This is the best way to recognize certified vs. non-certified diamonds. Each feature of the diamond matters , so checking it can be a good way to get a perfect diamond for your jewelry.

You Get High quality Diamonds

GIA and AGS only certifies diamonds that pass the standard features a diamond should possess. If diamonds are disfigured or have cracks they will not be certified. Purchasing diamonds with a certificate will give you assurance that you are getting a diamond with excellent quality. Diamonds with excellent quality have longer durability which is worth paying its high price.

Support for Resale and Insurance

If ever you plan to resell your diamonds, the certificate is needed before they can accept it. Certificate is a very important document when selling since it serves as a proof of the authenticity of the diamond. Another situation where certificates are relevant is on insurances, if ever there will be incidents where you need to claim the insurance of your diamond then presenting its certificate will be one of their requirements.

Is It Ever Okay to Buy a Non-Certified Diamond?

Non-certified diamonds can be used to accessorized rings or other jewelry since these sizes are not certified by GIA or any certifying institution. However, using uncertified diamonds as center stones is not recommended. Diamonds that are .2 carats and below are not accepted for testing by the GIA since their features are hard to tell.

Are Uncertified Diamonds Worth Anything?

Getting diamonds that are not certified is like gambling since you are not sure if your diamonds are indeed authentic. The risk is higher with uncertified diamonds. They may have worth but proving it may be an issue in case you want to resell them. Certified diamonds will still be an ideal choice to let you have peace of mind and assurance that your diamond is authentic and the worth of your money equals the value of the diamond you bought.

Should You Only Buy Certified Diamonds?

Yes if you want to avoid issues then getting a certified diamond will be a wise choice. Diamond certificate can give you several benefits and can be used in several situations. Another thing you have to make sure of is having your diamonds certified by a known and authorized institution. You have to pay some fee for it, but it will be worth it rather than taking the risk of  getting it certified by another institution or individual who is not authorized. This is as good as uncertified diamonds.

Choosing between certified and non-certified diamonds should not be an option. If a buyer knows the worth of the diamond they are buying they should always go for the certified ones. Don’t be deceived by the price differences, care more about the quality and features of the diamond you will purchase. Diamonds are pricey, and it is right to be tested and certified before selling it in the market. If you want to get your money’s worth never ever get an uncertified diamond instead make sure to get a certification for each diamond you purchase.
